For more than fifteen highly rewarding years, I had the privilege of commissioning and editing hundreds of ingredient stories as the founding editor of the Cosmetics Design titles.

During that time, one thing became very clear. Many ingredient innovations struggle to gain editorial traction, not because the science is weak, but because the story is not being told in a way that editors recognise as publishable.

When you sit on the editorial side of the desk for long enough, patterns emerge.

Here are three lessons that repeatedly determined whether an ingredient story moved forward or stopped at the pitch stage.

Editors are not simply looking for a list of features. They are looking for a clear story. What problem does the ingredient solve? Why is it relevant now? How does it connect to broader industry trends such as biotech actives, longevity science or microbiome research? If the narrative is unclear, the pitch rarely progresses.

Editors are writing for formulators, scientists and technical decision-makers. That means practical application matters. How does the ingredient behave in formulation? What concentrations are effective? What challenges does it solve for R&D teams? These are the details that turn a marketing claim into an editorial story.

Strong ingredient coverage almost always rests on credible scientific explanation. Mechanism of action, clinical data, delivery technology and biological pathways all help editors understand why an ingredient matters. When the science is explained clearly, confidence follows.

These insights come from years spent commissioning stories that shaped how ingredient innovation is reported across the global beauty industry.

At the upcoming in-cosmetics Global, I will be discussing these principles with exhibiting companies and explaining how the right editorial framing can turn ingredient innovation into stories that editors want to publish.
